In 2021, more than 1 in 4 Americans will continue to work-from-home and by 2025, it’s expected that 36.2 million Americans will continue this remote work. This is an incredible 87% increase from pre-pandemic years. (CNBC)
By now, we’re all pros at working from home. Our office spaces are set up exactly how we want them, our coffee machines are on a timer, and our friends and family know when to leave us be. As we enter 2021 (hopefully a better year!), it’s important to leave behind old habits and mindsets that will prevent us from flourishing in the coming year. By physically changing your routines or environment, you’ll also be switching your emotional state.
Take a look at the tips below to reimagine your work-from-home lifestyle and avoid falling into a mental rut.
Change your schedule
In 2020, you may have scheduled the perfect day. Work from 8 to 5, walk at 5:30, dinner at 7, etc. However, this constant repetition of activities may actually be mentally challenging. Instead, try moving your walk to the morning or midday. This will help vary your schedule and leave you feeling mentally awake.
Take advantage of new communication channels
COVID-19 has sparked incredible technology developments for all aspects of life. Tech companies around the globe are working hard to produce applications, websites, and more to make your work and personal lives easier. Check out the following platforms for increased productivity or just pure enjoyment:
Professional Resources:
- Trello: collaborative boards and to-do lists
- Evernote: for taking and organizing notes
- Grammarly: to make sure your notes are grammatically correct
- Harvest: to help track time and expenses
- Canva: to express your creative side
Personal or Social Platforms:
- TikTok: It completely took over the social media landscape in 2020 and continues to entertain billions of users
- Among Us! was the #1 downloaded free iPhone game in 2020. Interact with other players!
- Disney+: Unwind and relax with both new and classic Disney series
- Houseparty: Keep in touch with friends or meet new people
Overall, prioritize your mental health
At the end of the day, you’re mental health and happiness should come first. 2020 has been emotionally harder than anyone expected. Nearly 1 in 5 adults reported that their mental health was worse in the last year.
Managing your mental health can take various forms. For some reaching out to a therapist may be helpful, while for others taking a stretch break or talking to loved ones can help. It may take time to figure out what coping mechanism is right for you, but once you find it, both your personal and professional worlds will be bettered.
